BIDDENDEN SMARDEN ROAD 1. 5272 Vane Court TQ 84 SE 2/164 II*

2. C15 timber-framed Wealden hall-house with plaster infilling and curved braces, 2 storeys and attics. The end window bays on the 1st floor oversail on the protruding ends of the floor joists and brackets. The recessed portion in the centre has overhanging eaves supported at each end on a curved brace and in the centre on another pair of the same standing on a projecting bracket. Steeply pitched hipped tiled roof with 2 modern hipped dormers. Four casement windows. Brick chimney-breast on the north wall, with a modern portion built out beyond it on the ground floor. King Prajadhipok of Siam who reigned from 1925-35 and abdicated in 1935 lived here for some years. A good example of a Wealden Hall-house, a form not typical in Biddenden.
