HADLOW HARTLAKE ROAD, GOLDEN GREEN TQ 64 NW 6/65 Goldhill House - II
Large house. Lower parts of the rear wall are probably C17 but the house is early C19, mid/late C19 additions and circa 1970 conservatory. Flemish bond red brick with some burnt headers; brick stacks and chimneypots with C19 chimneypots; slate roof.
Plan: Large house faces north west. Main block has a double depth plan. Front and back room either side of central entrance hall and staircase. The rooms are heated by projecting end stacks. Principal rooms to front and rear left, kitchen rear right. Service doorway in left end wall. Kitchen/bakehouse block on right side set well back and projecting a little to rear. It has a projecting rear lateral stack and an end stack although it has a one-room plan. This appears to be a mid C19 addition or rebuild. The first floor room was used as a ballroom within living memory.
Main house is 2 storeys with attics in the roofspace and a cellar under. Circa 1970 conservatory to rear, kitchen/bakehouse block is 2 storeys.
Exterior: Main block has symmetrical 2.1:2 window front of 12-pane sashes with rubbed brick flat arches over. Flat pilasters each end and centre bay breaks forward. First floor window has a moulded stucco hood on consoles. Central doorway up 2 stone steps contains a 6-panel door and overlight under a flat roofed Tuscan porch with moulded entablature. Narrow painted bands project at first floor level between the centre bay and end pilasters Moulded eaves cornice and roof is hipped both ends. Similar fenestration round the other sides and both end walls contain a central panelled door and doorcase with moulded entablature. Rear 4-window garden front includes a 16- pane sash to the kitchen and oculus high in the wall left of centre. Also circa 1970 full height, glass walled conservatory projects to rear of stairs. Flat-roofed dormers each end and stairs lit by a lantern which projects from the middle of--the roof. the front of the kitchen/bakehouse block has another panelled door with an oculus window above and to right a 16-pane sash on each floor, 12-pane sashes to rear. Its roof is hipped.
Interior: Well-preserved with a great deal of original joinery and other detail like the stick baluster stair with mahogany handrail ahd shaped stair brackets, panelled doors, moulded plaster cornices etc. Some of the marble chimneypieces are secondary.
