GV II
House with shop and post office. Late C18/early C19 with late C19 shop front. White-washed Flemish bond brick; brick stacks and chimneyshafts; peg-tile roof.
Plan: Double depth plan house facing south east onto the street. Front and back room either side of central entrance hall and main stair. This arrangement has been somewhat altered since the building has been subdivided. Rooms heated by axial stacks and end stack to front of left end. Front left room is a shop.
3 storeys with secondary extensions to rear.
Exterior: Originally a symmetrical 3-window front but now a late C19 shop and porch projects in front of the centre and right end at ground floor level. Porch has a 4-panel door under a tall overlight with no glazing bars. It is flush with the shop front. Shop has central recessed doorway similar to the house doorway except that here there is a C20 glazed door. Shop window with plain glazing bars. At right end and flanking both doorways are panelled pilasters. Continuous fascia, moulded entablature and flat roof. All the original windows have flat arches of rubbed brick. Ground and first floor have 16-pane sashes and second floor has shorter 8-pane sashes. Plain parapet. Twin roofs parallel to the street are hipped both end. Rear first floor windows have segmental arch heads and contain 12-pane sashes.
Interior: Not inspected but is said to have been rearranged and that little original joinery remains.
Commercial House is one of a varied group of listed buildings in the middle of Hadlow.
