THREE ELM LANE, GOLDEN GREEN
Barn approx 4m south of Tithe Ward Farmhouse

GV
II

Former barn. Probably C17, altered in early C20, renovated circa 1988.
Exposed timber-framing, partly underbuilt with C19 and C20 brick; peg-tile
roof.

Plan: Barn on a rough north south axis. It faces west. It has been
converted to garages and workshop. It is 2 storeys with probably secondary
lean-to outshots each end.

Exterior: 3-bay front. Windows were put in in the late C20 but they are C19
iron-framed casements with attractive glazing bar patterns of intersecting
hexagons. First floor has a large central 2-light window flanked by small
single light windows. Left bay at ground floor level contains a C20 door to
right of a tall narrow light. Centre and right bays have C20 garage doors.
Similar windows to outshots. Main roof is half-hipped both end.

Interior: The loft is carried on chamfered and step-stopped crossbeams. They
have been inserted here in the C20 although might have been at a lower level
earlier. Roof carried on 2 collared tie-beam trusses with clasped side
purlins. Queen struts were removed when tie beams were cut through. Many of
the common rafters appear to have been late medieval and reused since they
include the notches for lap-jointed collars.
