6/22 Stables at Andover House
GV II
StabLes. Late C18 (possibly carried out in 1772-6 by the younger Matthew Brettingham when he was working on the mansion; q.v.). Squared and coursed rubble with flush rusticated dressed stone quoins, stone dressings and hipped roofs, that to south-west with stone slates, those to north-west and north-east with concrete tiles. Four sides of a courtyard with south-east range forming rear wall of Andover House and Estate Office (q.v.). Round-arched, pedimented entrances to all sides except south-east, but that to north-west blocked. Round-arched arcading to inner courtyard walls, blocked on all sides except north-west which has 2-leaf plank doors to stables within. Diocletian windows in arcading to all ranges. Bell turret on ridge of south-east wing: square in plan with open top and pyramidal cap; clocks on south-east and north-west faces.
