II*

Large house with attached dairy to rear left. Circa 1595 - 1600 house with late C17 dairy and late C18 attached flower room. Rubble stone with ashlar porch, stone slate roof with saddle backed coping and paired ashlar stacks. E-plan with projecting gables either side added slightly after central body of house built, and cutting twin gabled stair turrets to rear. 2 storey symmetrical 5 window front. Central projecting gabled, 2 storey porch has Renaissance door surround and 3-light hollow chamfered mullion window over. Porch added slightly after central range. To left and right of porch is one 4-light hollow chamfered mullion with drip mould. Projecting wings on either side have 4-light mullioned windows with king mullions and drip moulds, to ground and first floor. Relieving arches over both. One 2-light mullioned window with drip mould in attic gable. First floor of central range has one 3-light mullioned window to either side of porch. 2-light mullioned windows on returns of porch and gables. Rear has same projecting wings to sides, which partly cut twin 3 storeyed stair turrets, having 1-light, and 2-light mullioned windows above, To right of central range is single unit flower room in Bath stone, of late C18. To left is C20 4-light mullioned window lighting hall. 2 dormers inserted in attic. Interior: stone-flagged entrance hall has early C18 bolection moulded fireplace. Dining room in left wing has mid C18 panelling, said to be from Corsham Court. Doors are C17, one having carved entablature with Corinthian columns and carved heads to frieze. Large stone fireplace has naive carvings of fishes and animals, with moulded panels and cornice. Parlour in right wing has large fireplace interlaced arcading motif to frieze and fluted columns either side. Late C18 flower room has barrel vaulted ceiling. Twin spiral staircases to rear have solid oak winders and continuous newel in 2 sections. Bedrooms with bolection moulded fireplaces. Attached late C17 dairy to rear left is rubble stone with stone slate roof. Single storey with attic, ground floor window is 3-light ovolo mullioned and above is 2-light both with drip moulds. Interior is open to roof. Originally separated from house, but connected by early C20 wing. (Country Life, 4 Dec. 1937, by Arthur Oswald).
