CODFORD HIGH STREET, Codford St Mary ST 93 NE (off south side) 7/61 The Cottage GV II Detached house. C17, extended to north c1700, services rebuilt mid C19. Square-panelled timber-framing with rendered wattle and daub panels to C17 range, early C18 range in dressed limestone, C19 brick and rubble stone wing, thatched roof with coped verge to north and hip to south. L-plan; 2-bay timber-framed build with stone fire bay and one-bay c1700 to north and C19 wing to south west. Two-storey, 2-window west front. Four-panelled door with wooden porch with crude Ionic columns, 2-light casement to right and 3-light wood mullioned casement to first floor of timber-framed build, stone range to left has 3-light mullioned casement to both floors and string course. Left return has blocked chamfered light to attic. Rear has 3-light mullioned casement to ground and first floors of stone build, 2-light and 3-light ground floor casements to timber-framed build, 3-light casement to first floor left and oriel on carved wooden brackets with leaded casements to right. C19 service wing has planked door and two segmental-headed 2-light casements to ground floor, two 2-light first floor casements, external rendered stack to gable end. Rear of wing has planked door and first floor oriel with casements. Interior: Two-bay C17 range has chamfered beams with stepped stops, open fireplace with chamfered lintel on chamfered stone jambs with bar stops, door with 2 moulded panels to ground floor. Timber-framed former external wall exposed between C17 range and services, retaining blocked 3-light wood mullioned window. Parlour of c1700 has stone fireplace surround with chamfered jambs and lintel, window shutters with fielded panels and door with 2 fielded panels. First floor has chamfered beams and planked doors, tongue and groove partitions. Plain collar and tie-beam roof of light scantling over C17 range. A little altered example of a house of several phases.
