II ETCHILHAMPTON Tichborne Farmhouse SU 06 SW 6/210
II
Farmhouse, now house. Some C16 fabric, but considerable extension and remodelling especially in early to mid C19 by John Titchborn, 1840. Some painted brickwork and part scribed rendering on brick, plain tile roofs, brick stacks, stone dress- ings to windows in rendered wing. Farmhouse originally an L-plan through passage with services to right (on north, entry side) position of stair not now discern- ible; to the left, in the early to mid C19 a new projecting wing added, with increased ceiling heights, partly obliterating earlier work. Entrance front is two storeys, 1+3 windows; wing, left with 2-light mullioned casements to Gothick heads under stopped drips, older block with 2 and 3-light casements with hori- zontal bars in similar dressings, also glazed door left and plank door under C20 porch, right. Return, left, has two 2-light over one 3-light Gothick, as front of wing, and, set back, an external stack flanked by late sash. Garden front has 2:3:2:1:2-light wood casements at eaves, above 2:3:2:door:bay window; wood casements, the canted bay shares a pent roof with a part-glazed door, and has full height doors to Gothick heads. Left and half hipped over plain gable and lean to; large brick buttress on left end of garden front; ridge stack and corner stack. Interior much modified, retains lower parts of 2 pairs of fill has 4 cut off at upper ceiling level. Room to right of entry on ground floor has 4 deep-chamfered beams, including those at wall position, and some remains of square panel wall framing, also chamfered stopped joists, some replaced with C20 copies. Adjoining room also heavy chamfered and stopped transverse beam. Several good 3-panel Gothick doors, with H hinges. Back left room, in early section, has some remains of timber-framing, probably more concealed by later decorations. One beam near probable through passage has mortices, possibly for original screen. C19 staircase. Remains of a good early C18 wood fire surround with embellished pulvinated frieze in front left room of C19 rebuild. One upper room has good C18 over-door with high quality enrichment similar to the fire- place below, and C19 fluted pilasters, good 2-panel fielded door also early C18 date. Roof space contains fragments of first roofing, with cut-off ends of crucks, and some purlins, but otherwise raised and restructured in C19 and C20; centre bay includes an enclosure of unknown purpose, in-framing with wattle and daub panellings. This is still a handsome house, and the late exterior conceals important earlier elements
