CHESTERTON AND KINGSTON SP35NE 5/49 Nos.1, 2 and 3 Humblebee 22/06/81 Cottages

GV II

Row of 3 cottages. Said to be mid C16 barn converted to cottages mid C17. Refaced and altered late C18. Timber framed; refaced and partly rebuilt in Flemish bond red brick with flared headers. Old tile roof; brick ridge and right end stack. Each is one-unit plan. 2 storeys; 6-window range. No.3 on right has plank door with painted wood lintel. 2-light casements, mostly leaded; some fragmentary or missing. Ground floor windows have brick segmental arches. Left return side of No.1 has doorway on each floor. To rear: plank doors and one and 2-light casements to ground floor only. Interior: Nos.I and 2 have open fireplaces with C19 cast iron ranges; No.2 has bread oven. Stud partitions. No.2 has ogee-stop chamfered ceiling beam and 2 jowled posts. Straight flight winder stairs. Wide floorboards. Trenched purlin roof has tie beams cut through. Said to have originally been the stables of Chesterton House, demolished in 1802.
