1832 by J C Jackson. Monument to mark the site of the execution of Piers
Gaveston, the favourite, and supposed lover, of Edward II, in 1312. Sandstone ashlar. 25ft high.
Comprises five stepped plinth, on top of which is a square base with a plaque
in its south face. Base surmounted by four square pillars topped by a stone
slab on which is a heavy short stone cross. The inscription on the plaque
reads "In the hollow of this rock was beheaded on the 17 day of July 1312,
by barons lawless as himself, Piers Gaveston, Earl of Cornwall, the minion
of a hateful king, in life and death a memorable instance of misrule".
