NUNEATON AND BEDWORTH NEWDEGATE STREET SP39SE (East side) Nuneaton 2/62 No.35 18/05/77 (Formerly listed as the Union of London and Smiths Bank) GV II
Includes No.31 Bridge Street. Building Society offices, formerly a bank, and shop. Dated 1909. Architects Messrs. Bateman and Bateman. Limestone ashlar; first floor of English bond brick with ashlar dressings. Hipped plain-tile roof; brick and ashlar stacks. Late C17. 'English Rennaissance' style. 2 storeys and attic; 6 narrow bays, 4-window range. Ground floor has banded rustication throughout; concave corners have alternating quoins to first floor and elaborately carved and moulded corbels. Symmetrical front to Newdegate Street has double-leaf 8-panelled doors to first and sixth bays with console keystones, and richly decorated stone projecting arched hoods on moulded brackets. 4 plate-glass round-arched windows have moulded imposts, leaded fanlights and console keystones. String course band. First floor has first and sixth bays.blank. 4 closely-set leaded stone cross windows have moulded eared architraves with husk drops and cornices. Stone egg and dart and modillion cornice. Segmental-pedimented dormers have leaded 2-light wood mullioned windows. Large ridge stack between second and third bays has stone bands and fielded panel with moulded architrave and open segmental pediment. Front to Bridge Street is similarly detailed. Ground floor has 2 arched windows to left. No.31 has late C20 shop front, but retains original bolection-moulded stone stepped architrave with drops and ornamented cornice. First floor has 2 pairs of windows. Central ridge stack. Rainwater head is dated.
