OVER WHITACRE ATHERSTONE ROAD SP29SE (West side) 3/128 Stone Cottage - II Farmhouse. Mid-late C17, extended early C18. Sandstone rubble, part rendered, with dressed sandstone to the quoins. Red brick. Roof of blue/black plain-tiles. East gable end has C18 projecting stack of red brick with offsets. West gable end has projecting stack of sandstone rubble with offsets and 2 diagonally set shafts of red brick, rebuilt. Two-unit plan with central doorway and staircase. Wing of one unit added to front in early C18 and a further service wing to rear slightly later. 2 storeys and attic. One C19 gable dormer on the front with C20 wood casements to first floor. At ground floor 2 windows including one on site of original central doorway in segmental arches. The wing to the front has one C20 casement to each storey. The rear wing is of similar material, now rendered. One storey and attic. Interior: Inglenook hearths to each gable end wall. Stop-chamfered main beams, but plain joists. Framed partition walls of substantial scantling on either side of the narrower stair and entry bay. Originally with opposing front and rear doorways. At first floor the ceilings are original indicating a later C17 date. There is an original doorway leading from the first floor landing to a chamber which also has a stop-chamfered main beam. The roof is of 2 tiers of through-purlins. Queen struts from tie beams to principal rafters. Wing to the front has similar roof.
