Courthouse and police station now offices. Dated 1892 on shield below clock turret.
Red brick, dressed stone details, brick eaves cornices, slate roofs. Asymmetrical
design in an Arts and Crafts style: courthouse to right with front gable and
surmounted by clock turret capped by bellcote; two storey police accommodation
block to left and central linking single storey bay with two storey to right
adjoining courthouse. At rear a single storey central wing with hipped end
roof for station cells. A lower wing projects from rear of east side of
courthouse. Courthouse, wing and entrance porch have moulded stone copped
gables and moulded stone kneelers. A slightly projecting central feature on the
front of courthouse contains a large window; 3 lights wide with stone mullions
and 2 upper transoms under a full width segmental arched head all within a
moulded stone rectangular frame with crowning cornice. A panel with ogee ends
linked by a stone string course contains an armorial shield with date. Above
the clock turret with stone quoined battered angles and clock faces to front and
sides at top is crowned by an octagonal timber bellcote with copper ogee cap and
finial. Recessed porch with segmental arched head to left of courthouse
contains a 6-panel door with plain fanlight. Above porch, a 2-light stone
framed casement with stone mullion. Linking bay to left has a 3-light casement
with upper transom and stone head. Police accommodation block of 3 bays: third
bay on left projecting slightly with cross gable. A brick stack projects on
the right hand gable end. A panel defined by brick string courses between the
ground and first floor windows. Central doorway with fanlight. A 2-light
casement with upper transom to right of doorway and on both floors of cross
gable bay. A 2-light casement to left and a single light in centre on first
floor. All openings with stone heads. Rear gable end wall of courthouse has a
slight projection which contains a timber framed of the same design as the front.
The cell wing has a small window with semi-circular arched head and iron frame
behind C.I. vertical bars. On the ridge a brick ventilation stack. Courtroom,
of 4 bays with feet of braced collar trusses supported on carved stone wall
corbals, ceiled at level of collars. Leadl.ight glazing with rectangular panes
to windows. Clock tower built by public subscription in memory of George Burrow
Gregory of Boargell.
