BEMBRIDGE SZ68NW DUCIE AVENUE 1352-0/2/18 Greylands GV II

Originally a house, at time of survey just vacated as a school. Mid C19 in Gothic style embellished in late C19 and altered in C20. Stuccoed with roof having alternate courses of plain and scalloped tiles, brick chimneystacks and wooden bargeboards. L-shaped building of 2 storeys and attics, 5 windows. Projecting gable of 2 bays to left-hand side with carved bargeboards, pendant and finial. Pointed window to attic. Other windows are C20 casements, 1st floor and attic windows with hood moulding. Moulded band between ground and 1st floor. Other windows are C20, Right side gabled projecting porch with carved bargeboards and stone sundial dated 1760 with iron cherub's head and iron gnomen. Clustered brick chimneystacks. One ground floor room has a superb late C18 marble firepalce with frieze of swags, a panel of cupids riding on a quiver of arrows, end panels of cupids and pilasters with paterae and wheat ear drops. Cast iron firegrate. Fine door with 6 fielded panels in mahogany. Entrance hall has C19 stone fireplace with surround of C17. Delft tiles and elaborate C17 iron fireback represention of Neptune and sea horses. Brass pothook above. The overmantel is late C19 but incorporates some panels of C17 carving, possibly Flemish in origin. The hall is panelled and incorporates reused C17 panels, either with floral motifs, arched motifs and there are 2 very fine quality high relief carved panels showing rustic feasting, probably Flemish or Dutch. 4 mahogany 6 fielded panelled doors. Former staff room has a late C19 panelled room in Jacobean style with pilasters to door, strapwork panelled and pilastered overmantel and stone 4 centred fireplace with spandrels having blank shields and sinuous leaf tracery. Former dining room has late C19 elaborate oak overmantel and is panelled throughout. C19 well staircase has oak dado panelling, 3 turned balusters to each tread with scrolled tread ends and octagonal iron cupola with ovolo moulding and fasces decoration and frieze of ovolo moulding, swag and urn decoration. Ionic columned portico. 1st floor room has marble and wooden fireplace with swags. Included for superb introduced. features. The doors and marble fireplace seem too grand to have been taken from Northwells (qv) with which it is linked at 1st floor level:
