NEWCHURCH SZ58SE Apse Manor Country Hotel 1352-0/4/128 21/07/51 GV II

Hotel, formerly manor house. Late C16 or early C17 altered and extended in C18 and C19. Built of Isle of Wight coursed stone rubble with tiled roof. Roughly L-shaped building of 2 storeys. North wing, late C16 or early C17. 3 windows including one in gable with headers and one in projecting 2 storey porch. Gable has early C17 3-light stone mullioned window with dripstone and below early C17 5-light mullioned and transomed window. To left of this is C19 casement on 1st floor and 3 light C17 mullioned window on ground floor. Two storey projecting porch to south has C19 oriel on 1st floor and, on ground floor, a circular colunm and 2 centred arched door with hood moulding. Projecting stone chimneybreast at the north end. Also 1 storey service wing with 1 mullioned window. South wing is C19 with large gable and casement windows, some with mullioned and transomed windows. West wing is probably an C18 addition with semi-circular staircase turret. Attached to south is C19 wing now in separate ownership not of special interest. Interior has Dining Room with late C16 or early Cl7 stone 4-centred arched fireplace with blank spandrels. Oak roll-moulded panelled ceiling. Early C19 6-panelled door. Some chamfered spine beams. At one time in the ownership of the Canons of Christchurch. (Winter CWR:The Manor Houses of the Isle of Wight:180).
