SD83SW CLEAVER STREET 906-1/3/39 (North side) Former Stable Block to Stanley Mill

GV II

Stable block and wagon-house to weaving mill, now garage. c1891, altered. Coursed sandstone rubble (rear wall of glazed red brick), slate roof. U-plan formed by main range with projecting wings, forecourt enclosed by screen wall with wide gateway at right-hand end. Mostly single storey, a 4-window main range with doorway between 3rd and 4th windows; gable of left wing has square wagon doorway with keyed lintel (and now a roller-blind door); right-hand wing, 1.5 storeys, has gabled dormer in re-entrant side with loading door and crane jib, and a square window in the gable with a lunette above. Right-hand gable-end of main range has almost full-width wagon entrance with cast-iron I-beam lintel and 3 sets of sliding doors. INTERIOR not inspected. A rare survival of a purpose-built mill stable range. Forms group with associated Stanley Mill, Shackleton Street (qv); included for group value.
