SS 62 NW CHITTLEHAMPTON THE SQUARE, Chittlehampton
1/158 Cottage including stable attached - at west end at north-west corner of the Square adjoining to rear of public conveniencess GV II
Cottage with stable attached. Probably early C18 but earlier fabric possibly concealed. Painted roughcast rendered stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof with gable ends. Brick shaft to stack at left end and stone rubble stack with tapered cap heightened in brick to rear right-hand corner. Basically 2-room plan with integral rear outshut containing staircase. A small dairy-pantry has been taken out of the left-hand principal room at its front right- hand corner. The right-hand room was separately occupied within living memory, with a second inserted staircase in the rear outshut. Direct entry into left-hand principal room and doorway to right end of rear outshut. 2 storeys. 3-window range. All 2-light casements, 2 panes per light. Ground floor has leanto C20 porch at left end, and three 2-light casements to right, 3 panes per light to central one, 2 panes per light to the outer windows. 2 small windows with leaded lights to right end of rear outshut. Lofted stable at left end has half- hipped corrugated iron roof. - Interior. Large square cut cross ceiling joists to left-hand room. Original fireplaces probably survive behind C20 ones in the 2 principal rooms. Mostly C19 joinery survives. Roof: No access to roofspace, truss over right-hand room appears to have been replaced but original survives over left-hand room.
