Large house now hospital. Rear north wing for John Carr (1667-1739); enlarged for Ralph Carr (1711-1807) - rainwater head 1750; John Carr (1764-1817) faced the house with stone, renewed the roof, changed the entrance from east to north and built dining room and kitchen wing. Sandstone ashlar with rusticated quoins and basement; roof of Welsh slate. T-plan. Front range: basement and 2 storeys; 7 windows by 2. Central doorway now holds sash with glazing bars in architrave under pulvinated frieze and cornice. Ground floor sill band and first floor band. Architraves to all windows, pulvinated friezes to those on first floor with segmental pediment in centre. Projecting eaves cornice. Rear wing: 2 storeys, 5 bays. 3-light canted bay and round-headed stair window in left return; Tuscan doorcase to half-glazed door in right return. Hipped roof of front range has 2 yellow brick transverse ridge chimneys. Double-span roof of rear wing has 2 end brick chimneys and 2 ridge chimneys. Interior shows early C18 stair with fat turned balusters and wide handrail in rear wing; high quality stucco ceiling decoration in main rooms on ground floor. Cornices throughout the building; Regency style alcoves and architraves to corridor from later inserted entrance; later stair has slender turned balusters, ramped handrail; stucco-decorated ceiling.
