Farmhouse. Late C15 open hall house with 2 crosswings; floor and timber
framed chimney inserted in hall in late C16, stack replaced in brick in
C18/C19. C17 parallel kitchen wing at SE. Timber frame roughcast with
red brick casing to ground floor at front except for E wing where
framing is exposed below jetty. Steep old red tile roofs. A large
1½-storeys house set at rear of yard facing W with gabled crosswings at
each end, not projecting, and a small parallel kitchen wing beyond a
chimney at rear of S crosswing. W front has a drip-board along the top
of the ground floor brickwork, entrance beside jettied S wing, a
3-lights casement window near the middle with a 3-lights swept roofed
dormer at the eaves, and a casement window to each floor of the 2
crosswings. Flush small-panes casements. Interior has exposed framework.
Wings probably same date as hall. 2-bays N wing has heavy flat joists
and chamfered and stopped crossbeam. On upper floor one room has
cambered tie-beam and 2-centred solid braces. S wing of poorer quality
with tension braces and steeply cambered tie-beam. In hall all 3 trusses
moulded, with moulded capitals to open truss of clasped-purlin roof.
Solid braces of simple curvature join purlins to principal rafters.
2-bays parallel SE wing has straight angle braces to S tie-beam,
straight tension braces to N end. Reeded moulding to soffit of floor
beam inserted in hall. A late medieval house with unusually good
interior details. (RCHM Typescript).
