4/5 Nuthill Farmhouse

- II Farmhouse. Dated 1825, with restorations of 1985-6 to front and interior. Yellow brick in Flemish bond. Welsh slate roof. L-shaped on plan: 2-room central entrance-hall south-west front with 3-room wing to rear left. 2 storeys, 5 bays; symmetrical. Stucco plinth with date inscribed at left angle. Entrance has step to projecting flat-roofed Doric porch with fluted columns carrying entablature with plain frieze, moulded cornice and hood; fluted pilasters flanking half-glazed panelled door and radial fanlight in panelled reveal. 12-pane sashes with sills and channelled and keyed wedge lintels. Ashlar first-floor sill band. C20 brickwork between first and second bays marks position of former late C19 bay window. Plain wooden eaves board with ornate cast-iron brackets carrying gutter. Hipped roof. End stacks. Left return, of 4 bays, has similar windows (those to fourth bay painted dummies). Interior. Restored open well cantilevered staircase with wreathed handrail, column balusters and newel. Main ground-floor rooms have original plaster cornices, and ribbed, panelled or fluted architraves to doors and windows, those to hall and ground floor right with carved rosettes to angles; beaded-panel window shutters. The sash windows are hung on chains.
