Details
SUNK ISLAND SUNK ISLAND ROAD TA 21 NE (east side) 10/86 Barn/cartshed/granary range on north side of foldyard approximately 50 metres north of Church Farmhouse GV II Barn/cartshed/granary range. 1856 by S S Teulon for the Crown Commissioners. Banded orange-brown and red brick with yellow brick dressings. Asbestos roof. Rectangular on plan, with cartshed range to west and through-passage to foldyard to east; forms north side of foldyard. 2 storeys. North side: 5 first-floor openings. Section to left has waggon entrance with double board doors beneath timber lintel, small board hatch door beneath segmental arch, board door beneath yellow brick segmental- pointed arch, inserted 4-pane segmental-headed window. Central brick staircase with flagstone treads and landing to first-floor granary door. Cartshed section to right has 4-bay arcade of segmental arches on rounded square brick piers with 3 circular tie-bar ends above inscribed "YOUNG & PECK LTD. HULL." First floor: central board door beneath timber lintel, flanked by pair of centrally-pivoted 4-pane casements to right, and a similar casement and pitching hatch with board door, and blocked hatch to left, all beneath segmental arches. Board doors have plain wrought-iron strap hinges. Half-hipped roof. Stepped eaves, tumbled-in brick to gables. South side: segmental-pointed board door with pair of breather slits to right; first floor with segmental-headed board door, breather slit to right, and 4 segmental-headed hatches to left. One of a series of mid C19 Crown estate buildings by Teulon. See item 6/76 for sources. Included for group value.
