Details
HINTON ST GEORGE CP HIGH STREET (North side) ST4212 9/57 Somerville, and front boundary railings 4.2.58 GV II Detached house. Probably C17 origins, refronted in C18 and C20. Ham stone ashlar facade, coursed rubble to sides and rear; thatched roof between coped gables; one ashlar slab and one brick end chimney stack. Two storeys, 3 bays. Outer bays have pairs of 12-pane sash windows, replacing 2-storey bay windows the upper with timber lintels and the lower with voussoired flat arches; later 4-pane sash window upper bay 2. To lower bay 2 a six-panel door set in beaded recess, with early C20 segmental-arched keystoned sidelights. Plain end gables; slated 2 storey extension to rear having parallel roof. Interior not seen, but reported is a likely 3-room cross-passage house modified, the east room extended to the rear and furnished with later C18 wall panelling, the stairs in a central position, and a rear lean-to on west end extends to 2 storeys: the main rear extension apparently built as a separate house, but now incorporated: west room has a cambered-arched fireplace with incised spandrils: various collar truss types in roof suggesting some reuse. Extending from front corners of house, with curved corners, a low stone ashlar wall crowned with neck-point wrot-iron railings, with pair gates opposite door; larger pair of gates having cast spearpoints to upper and middle rails, segmental toprails and semi-circle braces, on timber posts, against west gable, adding to setting. (VAG Report, unpublished SRO, 1973).
