Pair of houses. Early C19. Red brick with plain tile roof. 3 storeys.
Sandstone plinth, painted to right and rendered to left, plat band between
ground and first floors (painted or rendered to right) with raised top course,
moulded wooden eaves cornice, with fascia to left, and parapeted gable ends
with stone copings and kneelers. Integral brick end stacks and central
brick ridge stack. 6 bays, mainly 16-pane glazing bar sashes with painted
stone cills and gauged-brick heads. Central first-floor 12-pane sash to
each house, and 9-pane second-floor sashes except for 2 central gabled semi-
dormers with 16-pane sashes. C20 door in second bay from left and C20 six-
panelled door in second bay from right, each with doorcase consisting of
moulded architrave and plain surround with consoles supporting moulded
cornice. Left-hand gable end with 2 attic glazing bar sashes, first-floor
late C19 oriel, and- ground-floor glazing bar sash to right. Interior of
No. 40. Entrance hall with moulded plaster cornice. Wooden staircase in
one flight to each floor with moulded closed string, column-on-vase balusters,
columnular foot newel, and moulded handrail. Interior of No. 38 not
inspected.
