17/106 Forecourt and terrace - retaining walls, gates and gate piers to east, south and west of Acton Reynald School
GV II
Forecourt retaining walls, gates and gate piers and terrace retaining walls. Circa 1840. Grey sandstone ashlar. U-plan, approximately 420 metres long. Battered base, chamfered string course, and chamfered coping, ramped up slope and stepped up to piers. Pair of chamfered- rusticated square corner piers to south with moulded caps and large vase finials with carved fruit drops. Gateways positioned axially to east, south and west consisting of octagonal gate piers with tall deeply- recessed panels, moulded caps and carved finials. Pairs of wrought- iron gates with dog bars and dog rails, scrolled panels and scrolled cresting. Entrance to forecourt adjoining stable block (q.v.) to north consisting of 2 square gate piers with moulded bases, raised and fielded panels, moulded cornice and ovoid finials. 2 boarded gates. North- east corner pier with globe finial. Low terrace retaining walls immediately to south and east of house (Acton Reynald School q.v.) and short separate section to west. Plain coping, ramped up to corners and to short flight of steps. Large fleurs-de-lys ornaments flanking tops of steps to south and on coping to east.
