Old School House and attached outbuilding

Farmhouse, latterly school and shop, now divided into two cottages. Early
C17 with later additions and alterations. Timber-framed with rendered and
painted brick infill, partly roughcast and part weatherboarded; slate roofs.
L-plan consisting of long hall range, aligned north-south, with single-bay
cross-wing (also gabled to south) projecting to east at south end. Two storeys.
Framing: exposed to west side of hall range; square panels to left of stack,
four from sill to wall-plate, partly replaced by painted brick to ground floor.
Close-set vertical posts to first floor to right of stack with large irregular
square panels below. Irregular fenestration; five C20 casements directly
below eaves to left of stack, one to left and four grouped together to right;
five C20 windows to ground floor. Prominent gabled half-dormer to right
of stack has a late C19 casement to centre with a small leaded casement directly
below eaves. Late C20 casement to ground floor. Red brick ridge stack
to right of centre with lean-to rubblestone bread oven directly below. East
side has 2-storey lean-to abutting, formerly with external wooden steps, now
clad with C20 weatherboarding. Twin gables to road with bay windows [former
shop fronts (right canted)] to left and right of C19 half-glazed door under
bracketed gabled hood. Late C19 casement on first floor to each gable.
Full-height brick lean-to against north wall of cross-wing, which has timber
framed square panels exposed; external red brick end stack to gable.
Outbuilding: attached to north gable end of hall range. Late C17. Weatherboarded
timber frame with corrugated iron roof. Interior of house. Chamfered ceiling
beams to ground-floor rooms with timber framed square panels exposed to one
of cross walls of hall range; close-set vertical posts partly visible on first
floor. Parts of wall posts and collar and tie beam trusses also exposed
to hall range. Wide boarded oak floor boards to first-floor rooms.
Outbuilding has collar and tie-beam end truss to right with V-struts from collar.
