Details

HOPESAY C.P. MILL STREET (north side) SO 38 SE 4/160 - Nos. 1 and 2, Brook Cottage - II

House, now divided. C14 or C15 core, remodelled C17 and C18 with later additions and alterations. Roughcast timber frame, partly of cruck construction, on regularly coursed and dressed limestone block plinth, higher to right; roughly coursed limestone rubble to right gable end; slate roof. Original plan probably an open-hall house of 4 cruck-framed bays, floored over, stack inserted and extended in C17 with eaves raised in C18. 2 storeys. C20 casements, 6 directly below eaves and 2 on each side of roughly central C20 half-glazed door under contemporary gabled hood. Prominent rendered octagonal brick ridge stack with concave sides, dripstone and capping directly above, forming baffle entry. Capstone is a mid-C20 addition. Small red brick stack immediately behind ridge to right. Former roof-line visible to right gable end. Interior: No. 1 (left part). Timber frame (square panels) fragmentarily exposed throughout including to wide single-bay C17 addition to rear on left, which has collar and tie beam end truss. Left ground-floor room has deep-chamfered cross beam with heavy joists and partly infilled inglenook fireplace with chamfered wooden lintel. Oak winder staircase to right of fireplace. First floor has wide boarded oak floor boards and chamfered cruck blade with remains if arch-bracing visible in room behind and to right of stack (bathroom). The apex of this cruck blade is not visible in the roof space (plastered over and apparently truncated) but part of the corresponding blade is visible to front. There is apparently another cruck truss to the left of the large plaster-covered stack and possibly also to No. 2 [access not possible at time of resurvey. (August 1986)]. No. 2 not inspected but left ground-floor room (to right of stack) noted as having 2 chamfered spine beams with heavy joists and inglenook fireplace with chamfered wooden lintel. Right room (now divided) has 2 chamfered spine beams and heavy joists.
