14/21 No. 43 (George Hotel) - GV II Includes No. 3, Bailey Head and attached former stable block. House, now inn and shop. Early C18 extended 1742 (datestone) with later additions and alterations. Purplish red brick (painted to former stables) with rusticated angle quoins; plain tile roofs with coped verges on stone kneelers. 2 storeys and attics; wooden modillion eaves cornice to front and moulded cornice to right return; 7-window front, 4-paned sashes in C18 openings with plain lintels and projecting moulded keystones, C20 gabled eaves dormer to far left; late C19 inn front, re-modelled late C20,retains moulded entablature supported on decorated console brackets but partly infilled with purplish brown brick and new top-hung casements inserted, 4-panel door to left and 6-panel door to centre with blocked segmental-headed opening (probably C18) between 2 sections of C19 inn front; prominent ridge stacks to left and right of centre. Right gable end has datestone "1742" with initials above plastered over; late C19 doorcase to right (former entrance to No. 1, Bailey Head) now with late C20 top-hung casement inserted. Right return (forming No. 3, Bailey Head) probably slightly earlier than main section, see straight joint beneath tall ridge stack to left; 3 windows, thick glazing bar sashes (blind and painted in imitation to centre) with plain stone lintels and projecting moulded keystones, C19 hip-roofed dormers in bottom part of roof slope to left and right; C19 shop front and console- bracketed doorcase to left with similar window opening to those on first floor to right; tall external end stack to right. Former stable block attached at oblique angle to right, now part of shop; 2 levels, blocked eaves hatches to left and right and segmental-headed openings to ground floor, raised verges to right gable end. Mid-C19 two-storey red brick range at right-angles to rear of main section possibly a former maltings.
