OSWESTRY RURAL C P,
MORTON,
Pool Cottage
II
Cottage and attached out-building, now disused. Mid-to late C17, extended early to
mid-C19, further remodelled mid-to late C19. Mixed uncoursed rubble (probably replacing
timber frame to C17 part) with red brick dressings, partly rebuilt in yellow engineering
brick to rear; corrugated iron roof. Original single-cell cottage of end baffle - entry
plan with slightly later byre attached to right. Eaves of cottage raised when extended
by one bay to left in early C19. Eaves of byre raised when converted to domestic use and
single-bay cow house was added to right later in C19. Two storeys with red brick dentilled
eaves cornice to original part and early C19 addition. Yellow engineering brick dentilled
haves cornice to raising of byre and to C19 cow house. Four C19 casements (some cast-iron)
directly below eaves; similar segmental-headed windows to ground floor, two between centre
and right doorways and one to right of right doorway. Narrow rectangular opening to
ground floor of cow house, which has segmental-headed doorway with segmental-headed window
above to gable end. Doorways all segmental headed, including to far left, with boarded
doors. Red brick ridge stack to left over smoke-hood and integral red brick stack to left
gable end. Yellow engineering brick ridge stack at junction between converted byre and
C19 cow house.
INTERIOR. C17 part has timber-framed smoke hood with red brick infill;
elaborately moulded wooden lintel continuing over doorway and with end embedded in wall
to right is earlier and presumably reused. Timber framed wall to original right gable
end: square and rectangular panels, two from cill to tie beam. Chamfered spine beam with
stepped stop to right and chamfered joists with straight-cut stops. Red brick floor.
Long room to right in converted byre also has brick floor and brick fireplace with
segmental arch; flat joists. Early C19 addition to left of C17 part has segmental arch
to external bread oven. First floor removed. Ladder staircase to first floor of C17 part
cuts through timber frame of original left gable end, suggesting that it is a later
insertion. The original staircase was probably also behind smoke-hood but facing opposite
way. Roof entirely rebuilt except for original principal rafter visible below raising of
eaves to left of smoke-hood.
