Details

PARISH OF EDENSOR JAPP LANE SK 24/2569-24/2570 7/125 (East Side) 12.7.67 Post Office and Attached Cottage GV II Pair of cottages, now post office and cottage. Late C17 and c1830-40, probably by Paxton and Robertson. Tudor style to C19 part. Coursed squared sandstone and ashlar. Fishscale tile roof with coped gables, plain kneelers and ball finials. Ridge and gable stacks. Two storeys. South elevation of four irregular bays. Off-centre doorway with massive lintel and quoins, and gothic panelled door. To the left a C19 2-light casement and to the left again the jamb, lintel and sill of an C18 window. To the right is a 2-light casement with ashlar lintel, sill and jambs outlining a slightly wider window. To the right again a round window and a line of quoins. To the right again a doorway with stone lintel and gothic panelled half-glazed door, and a C19 2-light casement set in a disturbed C18 surround. The first floor has four C19 2-light casements and evidence of two C18 window. Projecting gable end to west with angle quoins. Bay window of 1-3-1 lights with bracketed sill, chamfered mullions and hipped roof. 2-light chamfered mullion window with returned hoodmould and gothic niche in the gable. Lower bay to left has a 3-light chamfered mullion window with returned hoodmould and a single light above, rising to a gabled half dormer. Single storey bay to left again has a 2-light chamfered mullion window and a similar window to the north gable end.
