CHASTLETON SP23SW 1/10 Grove Farmhouse

GV II

Farmhouse. Early to mid-C17 with later additions and alterations. Regularly coursed and dressed marlstone rubble with quoins carried up to gable ends; stone slate roofs with coped verges. L-plan with lower late C18 gabled addition attached to rear range. 2 storeys and attic. First floor has three 3-light chamfered mullion windows with C20 two-light mullion window between those to left and centre. Ground floor has original mullion windows to far left and right, of 2 arid 3 lights respectively, with C20 mullion window in position of infilled opening to right of former. Central entrance with flanking late C20 mullion and rectangular windows in position of C20 casements. 4 irregularly spaced gable dormers in roof slope, inner 2 inserted late C20. Integral ashlar end stacks, left with dripstone and moulded capping, right rebuilt above dripstone. Further original and C20 mullion windows to both sides of rear range, which has integral ashlar end stack. Interior. Much altered late C20. Chamfered ceiling beams to ground-and first-floor rooms and 3 open stone fireplaces to ground floor, that to right room with projecting keystone. C20 single-storey flat-roofed addition in angle to rear is not of special architectural interest. [2451]
