GV II

Pair of houses. Late C17, possibly incorporating parts of an earlier building,
remodelled early C18 with later additions and alterations. Roughly coursed
limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and quoins; concrete tile roofs to Warren
Hastings House, stone slates to Hastings Hill House, both with coped verges.
Warren Hastings House. 2 storeys and attic. Road front has C20 leaded casement
replacing glazing bar sash in plain stone surround with keystone to each floor;
gabled dormer directly above in roof slope. Late C19 memorial plaque to left on
first floor reads "WARREN HASTINGS/WAS BORN IN THIS HOUSE/DEC.6 1732/DIED/AUG.22
1818". Integral ashlar end stacks, right with moulded dripstone and capping,
left with shaft rebuilt in C20 above dripstone. Long earlier gabled range
running at right angles to rear with original entrance front on west side. 5
windows on first floor; glazing bar sashes with wood lintels directly below
eaves, narrow to left, 2 to centre and infilled to right with leaded wooden
mullioned and transomed window to far right. Ground floor has leaded casements
with chamfered wooden lintels to left and right of infilled doorway with
infilled opening and leaded window with wood lintel and chamfered rectangular
window with dripstone below to right of right window. 2 gabled dormers in centre
of roof slope. Integral ashlar end stack to left with moulded dripstone and
capping. Fragment of gable end of former attached barn below with wide gabled
C19 addition built on its site. East side has scattered C20 casements on both
floors and C20 ledged door under C19 bracketed segmental stone hood to far left.
Extruded integral lateral stack with moulded dripstone and capping to centre.
Hastings Hill House. Basic L-plan with gabled range to rear on left. Two late
C19 casements in C18 stone surrounds, those to first floor with projecting
keystones and two 2-light chamfered leaded mullion windows lighting cellar.
6-panel door to right with small window above. Two C19 gabled dormers in roof
slope. Integral end stack to left, rebuilt in C20 above dripstone. Gabled
staircase projection to rear in angle with rear range has chamfered rectangular
window lighting cellar and apparently reused single-chamfered doorway with
hoodmould (probably C14 and possibly brought from Old church (q.v.)) to left.
This has chamfered rectangular opening inserted in its infill. Interior: Warren
Hastings House: front part has infilled chamfered stone fireplace to right stack
with hearth-stone of first-floor fireplace visible in ceiling above. This stone
is covered with late C17/early C18 plaster decoration showing thistles, grapes
and rosettes and with intials "RW", probably for Robert Walter. Plain cross beam
with lock and key carving and exposed joists. Late C17 or early C18 dog-leg
staircase in main range rising to attic has barleysugar balusters, moulded
handrail and square newels: blocks leaded window on ground floor and partly
blocks chamfered wooden mullioned and transomed window above which is presumably
earlier than staircase. Oak spiral staircase rising to attic to right of lateral
stack, which has chamfered stone fireplace with keystone on ground floor.
Chamfered and plain ceiling beams and joists on both floors and several C18
two-panel doors. Hastings Hill House. Only partial inspection possible at time
of resurvey (August 1987). Right ground-floor room has deep-chamfered wood
lintel. Infilled doorway formerly leading to Hastings Hill House to left of
fireplace. Oak winder staircase in gabled projection leads to attic and
continuation of same in stone leads down to cellar which has twin barrel
rubblestone vault. Warren Hastings was the first Governor-General of India.
