CORNWELL SP2627-2727 13/84 No.1

GV II

House. Probably C16 or earlier with later additions and alterations including renovations of c.1939 by Clough Williams Ellis for Mrs. Anthony Gillson of Cornwell Manor (q.v.). Uncoursed ironstone and limestone rubble; straw thatch and stone slate roofs, thatch being renewed at time of resurvey (September 1987). Present H-plan comprises central hall range with cross passage in angle with slightly projecting gabled range to right; similar slightly projecting range to left is probably later. 2 storeys. Left gable has small C19 casement on first floor and C20 glazed door beneath. C19 paired casement to centre on ground floor of hall range and 2-light cavetto-moulded mullion window with leaded latticed lights directly below eaves to left of chamfered pointed doorway with hoodmould to far right. This is possibly C14, apparently in situ, and has opposing infilled doorway to rear. Right gable has C20 leaded latticed casement on each floor. Axial rubblestone ridge stack and small rubblestone ridge stack to left and right of hall range respectively, by Clough Williams Ellis. Lean-to with horseshoe arch partly cutting into right gable has stepped lateral stack, probably also by Clough Williams Ellis. C19 casements and sashes to rear. Interior. Inspection not possible at time of resurvey but likely to be of interest. (Buildings of England: Oxfordshire: p557) [2528]
