CHALBURY - SP 31 NE 2/12 Lee's Rest - II

Large farmhouse. C18 probably incorporating earlier features and much restored in 1950s. Coursed squared rubble with ashlar dressings and stone slate roof. E-plan, including former farm buildings to right now part of the house. 2 storeys; 6-window range. Projecting gabled porch to left of centre has C20 door and windows in side walls. 4-light C20 stone mullioned windows to right and left under drip moulds. Similar 3-light casements in projecting end wings, those to the right under timber lintels. Smaller mullioned windows on first floor. Massive external stone chimney on side of left wing; ridge chimneys to left of main range and on right wing. Interior has fireplace with Tudor-arched lintel in left ground-floor room; re-set panelling in former agricultural range to right; and some exposed roof timbers including a queen-post (or-strut) truss. The late C16 hunting lodge was apparently demolished soon after 1720 but there was a farmhouse on the site by 1768. VCH Oxfordshire 10 (1972).
