Details

ROUSHAM ROUSHAM PARK GARDENS SP4724 14/238 The Pyramid House 27/08/57 (Formerly listed under The Pyramid and Townsend's Building) GV II* Gazebo. c.1733-40, by William Kent. Ironstone ashlar; pyramidal mid/late C19 plain tile roof with finial. One storey. Semi-circular archway has imposts carried around flanking buttresses; Egyptian-style portrait relief in pediment above. Interior: 3 niches and 2 portrait reliefs. Built to provide view over River Cherwell towards eyecatchers in Steeple Aston parish. An unusual building, probably inspired by Vanbrugh's former pyramid at Stowe. Part of the landscape gardens laid out by William Kent between 1733 and 1740. (Rousham Park is included in the H.B.M.C. Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade I; Buildings of England: Oxfordshire: p746)
