2/118 Brighthill Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. Probably C17 partly re-modelled 1782. Coursed squared limestone with
some ashlar dressings; concrete plain-tile roof with ashiar gable stacks. 3-unit
plan. 2 storeys plus attic and 2 storeys. 3 bays to left of 4-window front are
higher and have a symmetrical arrangement: a 2-light casement over the central
doorway, which has a chamfered stone surround and projecting keyblock, and with
3-light casements in the outer bays, all with ashlar flat arches and projecting
keyblocks. Steep-pitched roof, with renewed roof dormers, has gable parapets
bearing stacks with moulded plinths. Lower bay to right has 2-light casements
and a subsidiary doorway, all with rubble flat arches. Rear of higher section
has a 2-light leaded casement; lower bay has an outshut. Single-storey range
returning to rear from left is probably formed from outbuildings. Interior:
spine beams and bressumers of 2 large back-to-back open fireplaces all have bold
ogee chamfer stops. A detached datestone, formerly over the main doorway, is
inscribed "H/ES/1782".
