GV 11*

House. Dated 1635/ ICT/ R on chimney. Coursed limestone rubble, roughcast over front wall, stone slate roof; limestone rubble stack with brick chimney. 2-unit lobby-entry plan. 2 storeys and attic; 3-window range. Present entry in right side wing; original entry was probably in centre of front wall. Ovolo-moulded lintel over 2-light wood-mullioned casement to centre of first floor range; other windows have moulded lintels over C20 three-light casements to ground floor and 2-light casements to first floor and attic. Gabled roof, 2 cross gables to front; ridge stack. In left wall is chamfered timber lintel over restored C17 one-light window and rear wall has timber lintels over C20 casements and blocked window openings. Centre of rear elevation has projecting two and a half storey gabled stair turret. Interior: C19 six-panelled doors. Left room has C19 panelled shutters, C20 bressumer over open fireplace with chamfered stone jambs and overmantel with arcaded panelling; flanking fireplace is green painted C17 panelling; chamfered beam with elaborate stops, elaborate early C17 plasterwork of jewelled strapwork on ceiling. Right room has chamfered and stopped beam and chamfered bressumer over open fireplace. C17 plank door to newel stairs. First floor left room has mid C19 fireplace and grate, chamfered and stopped beam. C17 panelled shutters to far right blocked window. C17 plank door in attic. To right is C18 two-storey and gabled block in similar materials with brick gable end stack; 2-window range of C20 casements and mid C19 porch and C20 door with pilastered architrave; interior remodelled in late C20. Late C20 extensions to front right, against right gable wall and to rear adjoining much altered mid C19 outshut. The jewelled strapwork ceiling in the house is similar to that at Holywell House, Shellingford lq.v.) and can therefore be attributed to the same school of craftsmen.
