Details

ST.HELEN WITHOUT FARINGDON ROAD SU49NE (West side) Shippon 8/138 The White House - II House. Probably medieval, refronted and right wing built in late C17. Rendered front and left side walls: rear wall of uncoursed limestone rubble: left wing of medieval coursed and dressed limestone (large masonry blocks), up to 2.5m. from ground. Gabled old tile roof; rendered ridge stack to left wing, and brick ridge stack to right. 3-unit plan with cross-wing to left. 2 storeys; 4-window range. Keyed flat stone arches with rendered surrounds to all openings. C20 plank door and C20 door in outer bays of right wing: early C19 sashes, and C19 two-light casements in right bay and to attic windows of cross wing. Left side wall and rear each have late C17 three-light casements with original wrought-iron fittings. Cross wing has carved medieval corbel heads to left and rear. Early C18 one-storey service range to right: of colourwashed limestone rubble with gabled C20 tile roof, brick ridge stack and queen-post truss exposed in right gable. Interior: right wing has open fireplace, quartered and stop-chamfered beams in room to left: also stop-chamfered beams and collar-truss roof. Cross-wing: stop-chamfered beams, including inserted floor with lodging beams in rear room, which has C17 open fireplace with chamfered oak bressumer and stone jambs. Late C17 open-well staircase with winders: turned balusters on closed string with ball finials and turned pendentives to newels. First floor has double-chamfered jambs to fireplace and overmantle in rear room. It is possible that the medieval masonry blocks in the left wing are re-used and not in situ, for huge early C13 stiff-leaf capitals have been found in the garden.
