ST.HELEN WITHOUT FARINGDON ROAD SU49NE (West side) Shippon 8/141 Church Farmhouse and Church 09/02/66 Farm Cottage approx. 100m SW of The Manor Prepartory School (Formerly listed as Church Farmhouse) - II Farmhouse, now 2 dwellings. C16 rear wing: front range and stair-turret built c.1720-40. Remodelled late C19/C20. Front: colourwashed limestone rubble with squared quoins; C20 tile roof, half-hipped to left; brick gable end stack to right, and lateral stack to rear, of stone finished in brick. L-plan with rear right wing. 2 storeys and attic; 5-window range. Segmental brick arches over central late C19 door, inserted late C19 door to left, and late C19 two-light casements: flat brick arches over similar first-floor casements. Raised brick storey band; coved wood cornice; three C20 roof dormers. Early C18 stair-turret built over part of Cl6 rear wing: timber-framed, of 2 panels deep with arch braces and brick infill; old tile roof is hipped to rear of stone end stack and also roofs right-angled C18 service range (brewhouse) of colourwashed limestone rubble. Interior: fine early C18 dog-leg with landing staircase, with turned balusters on closed string: noted as having stone fireplaces. Interior of Church Farm Cottage (C16) not inspected but likely to be of interest.
