KENNINGTON KENNINGTON ROAD SP50SW (East side) 7/62 Disused Church of St. Swithun, 09/02/66 now Village Hall (Formerly listed as Disused Church of St. Swithun) - II Church, now village hall. 1828, by Daniel Robertson. Coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings; stone-coped and gabled stone slate roof. Single-cell plan. Norman Revival style. Roll-moulded east window with stiff-leaf capitals on engaged shafts. 3-bay side walls have roll-moulded windows: dentilled eaves. 1960's flat-roofed extension to north. Bellcote on west gable rebuilt 1960's. Similar window above west door, which has double roll-moulded arch with capitals carved in light relief on engaged shafts of 2 orders. Interior: roof obscured. An early example of a Norman Revival church. One of the capitals to the west door is carved with a Sagittarius, which may be a rebus of the builder, Bowyer. (Buildings of England: Berkshire, pp.159-60; V.C.H.: Berkshire, Vol.IV, p.415).
