Details
ST.HELEN WITHOUT BARROW ROAD SU49NE (South side) Shippon 8/128 Church of St. Mary Magdalene 09/02/66 GV II Church. 1855, by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Coursed and dressed limestone; gabled stone-coped old tile roof. Nave with north porch and chancel with vestry. Gothic Revival in late geometrical style. 3-light east window flanked by offset buttresses. 2-bay chancel and 4-bay nave have hood moulds with head-stops over mainly 2-light windows: priest's door to centre of south chancel wall, and plain door to vestry. Timber-framed north porch: moulded pointed doorway frames mid C19 double-leaf doors. East gable of nave surmounted by belfry: French-Gothic-style crocketed spire with trefoiled lights and spandrels. Interior: encaustic tile floor to sanctuary. Gothic style communion rail and pews with carved bench ends. Chancel arch has ballflower-carved corbels. Plain stone pulpit, and octagonal stone font inscribed "suffer little children to come unto me". Waggon roof to chancel : 4-bay nave roof with curved principals and steeply-cambered collars giving cruck effect. Stained glass: mid C19 east window, and stained glass in heads of 3 windows. C20 memorial windows. (Buildings of England: Berkshire, p.216).
