House. Late C16/early C17. Limestone rubble with squared quoins and timber
lintels; thatched roof with brick stacks. 3-unit plan. 2 storeys. 4-window front
has central door, between 2 added raking buttresses, with 2-light casements
above. 2 bays to right have regular casements including 2 with old frames and
leaded lights. Bay to left is probably later and has irregular casements with a
tiny casement, at first floor, in line with the stack. Roof is hipped to left
with stacks to left of centre and to right gable. Rear has a pair of doorways,
with thatched canopy, and further casements including one with heavy frame.
Interior: Heavy first-floor structure; massive stack with flanking winder stair;
open fireplace with heavy bressumer; replicated Tudor-arched moulded-stone
fireplace. Featured in R.D. Blackmore's novel "Cripps The Carrier".
