(North side)
Wheatley Windmill
II
Windmill. Mid C18. Limestone rubble with squared quoins. Octagonal plan. Tower
has 3 storeys with openings at each level on 4 sides, all with brick segmental arches
with stone keyblocks. The masonry is heavily patched with brickwork. Circular top
formerly held an ogee copper-clad cap, now dismantled. Interior: Much of the
structure and machinery survives. Cast on the boss of the windshaft is "EAGLE FOUNDRY1784". A drive shaft survives which served an external ochre-grinding mill. The windmill was rebuilt around 1763 after a fire and was last used in 1914 when the mill closed. It was struck by lightning in 1939 and the cap and sails were destroyed. It is said to be one of only 3 windmills remaining in the county.
