BROAD STREET 1. 1485 (South Side) The Museum of the History of Science (The Old Ashmolean Building) SP 5106 SW 8/149 12.1.54. I GV 2. RCHM 4. Built in 1679-83 by the University, Thomas Wood being master-mason and Arthur Frogley the master-carpenter, in Headington stone; this was patched with Clipsham stone and the surface artificially toned down, 1928-30. For measured drawings, see Phillips's Details I(1909), 230-34. 2 storeys and basement, 5 windows, 2 light mullion and transom windows with alternate triangular and semi-circular pedimented heads. Pedimented doorway. Balustraded steps and parapet added in 1957.
Exeter College, The Old Ashmolean Building. The Sheldonian Theatre and The Old Clarendon Building form a group with The Indian Institute, Catte Street.
