Details

ISLIP B4027 SP51SW (East side) 6/69 Lower Woods Farmhouse - II Farmhouse. Early C17, probably re-modelled early C18; extended mid C20. Limestone rubble with wooden lintels and some ashlar dressings; old plain-tile roofs with rubble gable stacks. 2 storeys plus attic. Front has a 3-light ovolo-moulded stone mullioned-and-transomed window to right, with renewed 2-light casements above and to the left. Irregular building lines extend up the wall on both sides of the mullioned window. The right end wall has a large chimney projection and 2 blocked openings. A lower range to left is mostly obscured by the C20 projecting wing but has a steeply-pitched roof with a gable stack. Rear of the higher section has renewed casements with some stop-chamfered lintels, including those to partly-blocked cellar windows. Rear of narrower lower range has a doorway with stop-chamfered lintel. The higher range has a C18/C19 roof and may have been reduced in height. Interior: large open fireplace with chamfered bressumer in lower range; higher range has an ovolo-moulded beam and a fine stone Tudor-arched fireplace with ovolo mouldings and recessed spandrels; noted as having a smaller similar fireplace upstairs. Formerly known as Leicester's and reputed to have been a hunting lodge. (V.C.H.: Oxfordshire, Vol.IV, p.207).
