Details

PARISH OF ECKINGTON CHURCH STREET SK 4379 11/76 Barn to north-west of Malthouse Farmhouse GV II Barn. Late C16 with C18 and C19 alterations and extensions, restored 1986. Coursed rubble coal measures sandstone with quoins, and a pantiled roof with stone slated eaves. Single storey with overlofts, built on a sloping site, with roadside eaves level barely single storey height. West elevation with four unglazed timber 3-light mullioned windows with timber heads and cills. East elevation with two bay offshut with a catslide roof, with two square window openings and a plain doorway. Double width opening to north end bay. Interior. Double and triple purlin roof structure, with some original timbers, including cambered tie beam to central part. Some trusses retain single straight windbraces. Intermediate bay to offshut with aisle post, jowelled and formerly braced longitudinally and laterally, now with longitudinal braces supporting aisle plate. North end wall incorporates remains of posts and braces. The building was used as a malthouse during the C19 and the remains of a drying floor remained until refurbishment in 1986. Included for group value.
