GONALSTON THURGARTON ROAD SK 64 NE (north side) 4/60 Gonalston Hall II Small country house. Early C19 hunting lodge, enlarged and remodelled by T. C. Hine 1850 for John Francklin, then Sheriff of Nottingham. Some later C19 and early C20 extensions, some late C19 wings subsequently demolished. Blue lias, ashlar, red brick. Slate roofs. West front by Hine of blue lias with ashlar dressings and quoins. 2 storeys plus attic, 3 bays. To the left is the attached circular tower of 4 stages with conical roof with copper tiles, topped with a weather vane. The right 2 storey projecting polygonal single bay with an ashlar coped parapet. Having a single tripartite cross casement to the front, a single casement in the right side and a doorway in the left side with glazed door, both with single transoms. Over the lintel is a moulded band with similar band extending under the sill. To the left is a chamfered arched ashlar doorway with decorativekeystone having a glazing bar door with glazing bar marginal lights and glazing bar fanlight. To the left is a 2 storey single projecting bay. Single tripartite cross casement with single moulded bands extending below the sill and above the lintel, the latter extending across the tower. Above right is a single casement similar to that below with moulded band extending under the sill. To the left is a single tripartite casement with single transom, each light is arched and cusped. Further left is a single tripartite casement with single transom and single moulded bands below the sill and above the lintel, the latter extending across the tower. Above right is a single small traceried light with hood mould and decorative label stops, ashlar coped gable over. To the left is a single ashlar trefoil with similar smaller gable over and decorative finial. Further left is a single ashlar quatrefoil with similar gable over. The tower is set on a low plinth and has 2 arched and cusped lights each with continuous hood mould extending from the main front. Above is a 5 bay open ashlar arcade with colonnettes, cusped arches, continuous hood mould and 6 human head label stops. The roof has 4 wood and copper lucarnes. Further left set back is a 3 storey 2 bay red brick heightened early C19 wing with left red brick gable stack, embattled parapet and band extending under. Doorway with single glazing bar double door, glazing bar marginal lights and glazing bar overlight. To the left is a doorway with similar door and overlight. Above is a single sash and to the left a single double sash. First and ground floor openings are under cambered arches. On the top floor are 2 glazing bar casements under segmental arches. Projecting from the left is an ashlar coped brick wall with doorway. To the left is a slightly projecting and higher, slate coped, brick wall and further left the shaped, brick coped gable of an outbuilding. The south front by Hine of blue lias with ashlar quoins and dressings. Single projecting ashlar stack to the left with 3 octagonal shafts, moulded cornice to the left. Raised ashlar coped gables. Set on a plinth with chamfered ashlar band over. 2 storeys, 3 bays. The right single bay slightly projects, is gabled and has a single quadripartite cross casement with single moulded bands extending under the sill and over the lintel. The central single bay also slightly projects and is gabled with smaller gable. There are no ground floor openings. The outer left bay projects, being the external stack. Single fixed light with 3 quatrefoils over, under a shaped arch. Above right is a single similar smaller window to that below, to the left is a single oriel window supported on 4 ashlar brackets and with lead roof, having a single tripartite cross window with arched and cusped lights both above and below the transom. Single moulded bands extend above the brackets and below the sill. The left bay is graded inwards and is narrower at first floor level. There is a single arched and cusped light. The apex of the right gable has a single decorative circular ashlar opening. All openings to the Hine wings with ashlar surrounds. East/entrance front refronted mid C20 has a doorway with C20 door and decorative C18 fanlight from Campsall Hall, Yorkshire. To the right, set back, are the early C19 wings, heightened early C20 and with altered openings. Attached to the right and projecting are the remains of the single storey stable block. Interior. T. C. Hine wings have good contemporary details including cornices, ceiling centres and some fireplaces. Single room with late C18 fireplace from Campsall Hall. First floor hall has arched ceiling with wooden beams simulating vaulting.
