SIMONBURN THE GREEN NY 8773 (West side) 19/137 Lych gate to Church of St. Mungo II
Lych gate. Dated 1885 by R.J. Johnson in memory of Lancelot J.H. Allgood. Ashlar sandstone with stone-flagged roof. Square plan. 4 gabled faces with angle buttresses and double-chamfered pointed arches. Front arch under hoodmould has moulded outer order with nailhead and engaged colonnettes. Gable has relief of cross slab and is inscribed:
To the Glory of God In memory of Lancelot John Hunter Allgood of Nunwick Esq. This gate is erected by his Kindred, Friends and Tenants A.D. 1885
Steeply-pitched cross-gabled roof with stone water spouts projecting diagonally at corners of eaves. Inner order of arch facing churchyard is inscribed in Gothic letters:
TILL THE DAY BREAKS AND THE SHADOWS FLEE AWAY.
Side walls have moulded coping and stone benches on inner faces. Octapartite stone vault with chamfered ribs.
