HUMSHAUGH HAUGHTON NY 97 SW 2/239 Wester Hall 15.4.69 GV II
House. 1732 for William Smith (name on re-set dated lintel) incorporating older fabric; remodelled as villa, with servants' wing added in early C19. Squared stone front with rubble returns, C19 parts smaller rubble; cut dressings, tooled-and-margined to C19 parts; Welsh slate roofs. C18 house L plan, infilled to rectangular block, with wing to north-west. South front 2 storeys, 5 bays. Central fielded-panel door with flanking lights and fanlight with radial glazing, within segment-headed C19 arch; 12-pane sash windows with raised wedge lintels and keystones. Hipped roof with 2 ridge stacks: left stepped and banded, right rendered. Set back to left, 2-bay end of servants' wing has tall 18-pane sash stair window on right and 16-pane sash with 8-pane sash over on left, all in alternating-block surrounds; hipped roof. Right return of main block 2 bays. Late C19 canted bay windows with 8-pane sashes and pyramidal roofs, 12-pane sashes over; earlier blocked openings between. Rear elevation shows round- headed stair window with Gothick glazing bars.
Interior: Open-string stair with wreathed and moulded handrail, and stick balusters. Some C18 fittings, including cupboards.
