THIRSTON BOCKENFIELD NZ 19 NE Bockenfield 4/59 Farmhouse II* House, c.1660 by Robert Trollope for the Heron family, incorporating earlier fabric, C19 rear outshut. Front squared stone with dressings, returns large rubble; slate roof. 2 storeys on cellars, 4 bays. Chamfered plinth; end bays flanked by rusticated pilaster buttresses with pineapple finials just below eaves. Central flush-panelled double doors in moulded flat-pointed arch flanked by detached barley-sugar columns carrying pedimented entablature with Heron arms. Above this a blocked circular window in cable-moulded surround, surmounted by raised lozenge-shaped block. Blocked 2-light mullioned cellar windows now partly buried. Three-light transomed windows with raised cable- moulded surrounds to ground floor bay 2, bay 3 and 1st floor bay 4; varied glazing. Other windows altered; that to ground floor bay 4 has C17 fireplace re-used as surround. Coped gables; stepped and corniced end stacks. Returns show earlier walling and blocked square chamfered windows to 1st floor. Interior; dog-leg stair with closed string, column balusters and plain domed handrail. Blocked 2-light mullioned window to stair.
