Details
ULGHAM ULGHAM GRANGE NZ 29 SW Ulgham Grange 7/76 Farmhouse GV II House, mid-C18 extended early C19. Brick with slate roof. L-plan. South front in two sections; west part 2 storeys, 3 bays, symmetrical. Central renewed 24-pane sash window inserted in former door opening with flat-arched head, flanked by French windows; 1st floor has single sash flanked by tripartite sashes, all with glazing bars and under segmental heads (heads and sills rendered). Stone-coped gables, rebuilt brick end stacks. Left return shows renewed 12-pane sash and trompe l'oeil window. Lower bay east raised to 2 storeys, in early C19, 12-pane sashes, the lower renewed; rendered sills and heads. Stone-coped gable, rebuilt brick right end stack. Right return shows earlier tumbled-in gable and an early C19 rear wing, extended later. 2 lst-floor Yorkshire sashes in earlier part, paired 12-pane sashes in later. Rear elevation shows central 20-pane sash stair window with Gothick glazing in semicircular head; trompe l'oeil window to right. Interior; open-well stair with stick balusters, some contemporary fittings. The house stands on the site of a C12 grange of the Cistercian Newminster Abbey.
